Hakimpur Upazila
Hakimpur Upazila (DINAJPUR district) with an area of 99.92 sq km, is
bounded by NAWABGANJ (Dinajpur) and BIRAMPUR upazilas on the north,
PANCHBIBI upazila on the south, GHORAGHAT upazila on the east, WEST
BENGAL of India and Birampur upazila on the west. Main river is LITTLE
JAMUNA and Tulsi Ganga.
Hakimpur (Town) consists of 9 wards and 14 mahallas with an area of
4.3 sq km. The town has a population of 25680; male 52.82%, female 47.18%.
The density of population is 5972 per sq km. The literacy rate among
the town people is 41.9%. The town has two dakbungalows.
Administration: Hakimpur thana was established
in 1950 and was turned into an upazila in 1984. The upazila consists
of 4 union parishads, 69 mouzas and 91 villages.
Archaeological heritage and relics: Copper
plate of the Gupta period (Baraigram).
Historical events: Hili was an important
war front during 1971. Freedom fighters had used it as a communication
point with the Indian army. They also used the place as a point of
entry into Bangladesh territory and attack Pakistani army. The joint
command of the Indian allied forces and the freedom fighters suffered
some loss in the battle at Hili.
Population: 66875; male 51.77% and female
48.23%; Muslim 91.56%, Hindu 6.27%, Christian 1.04% and others 2.13%.

treble crop land 14.79%. Land under irrigation 56%.

are landless, 20% small, 32% medium, 3% rich.
Value of land The market value of land of first grade is Tk 4500 per
0.01 hectare.

potato, sugarcane and oil seed.

paddy and tobacco.
Main fruits: Mango, banana, jackfruit.

23.8 km, semi pucca 6 km, mud road 33.60 km and railways 9 km.
Traditional transport: Palanquin (extinct),
bullock cart and horse carriage (nearly extinct), boat.
Manufactories and cottage industries:
Rice mill, flour mill, ice factory, biscuit factory, etc.
Cottage industries: Bidi, potteries,
goldsmith, blacksmith and tailoring.
Hats, bazars and fairs: Hats and bazars are 32; noted
fair Manglar Par Mela.
Main exports: Paddy, rice and wheat.
NGO activities: Operationally important NGOs are BRAC,
ITCL, CARE, ASA, GRAMEEN BANK, THENGAMARA MAHILA SABUJ SANGHA, and
Samaj Unnayan Karma Sangstha.
