Democracywatch is continuing these research and find that there is a great need to work towards combating human rights violation especially against women and children. We need your cooperation in this area.


Democracywatch regularly observes law and order situation especially the human rights violation of the country since April 2001. The research work is done on the basis of news and reports on law and order situation published in the six leading national dailies. The dailies are The Daily Ittefaq, The Daily Inquilab, The Daily Star, Prothom Alo, Jugantor,and Janakhantha.

A total number of 234 people are killed including 41 children in different incidents during May, 2003 all over the country.

The 51 -day Union Parishad (UP) election ends. At least 80 people have been killed , some of them children and teenagers, and 7500 injured in election violence since January 25, 2003.

875 Women and children raped over the year 2002

Over the last year, a total number of 875 women and children were raped where 45 women and 23 children were killed after rape. In this connection 445 women and 362 children were injured during the period.

In the case of acid throwing, a total number of 11 women were killed including a child girl; 210 women and 54 children were injured across the country.

In dowry, a total of 18 women and 8 children died where 37 women and 3 children were injured during the last year.

A total of 97 journalists were oppressed while 3 were killed over the period.

A total of 392 peoples were tortured by police throughout the country, where 104 were killed after torture and 288 were injured.

In suicide case, a total of 960 peoples were committed suicide where 524 were women and 396 were men during the year 2002. In the last five months (August -December) 40 children were committed suicide across the country.

Murdered 131 ,48 raped, 21 acid throwing in November

According to this report a total number of 131 people were murdered in the last month, of which 39 were women, 25 were children and 67 were men. A total number of 48 female were raped 21 children and 27 women were raped.

Of 7 dowry-related incidents, 5 were killed and 2 were injured. Some of the murdered housewives for dowry are Moslama Khatun (17) of Shatkhira, Jahanara (20) of Mymensing, Nasima of Shatkhira, Rowshan Ara (22) of Jessor and Noorjahan of Nator.

Democracy watch’s report revealed that a number of 24 people suffered acid throwing in the last month. Of them 13 were women, 5 were children and 6 men. Some of them were Baby Akther (15), Mosharaf (30), Sabina (15) and Antu (3) of Dhaka, Abul Kalam Azad of Pirojpur, Sheuli (15) of Rajshahi, Kulsum (27), Bakul (35) of Borguna, Moriam (40) of Laxmipur,

A number of 60 people committed Suicide in last month of them 16 men, 30 women and 14 children. Around 38 men were murdered and 811 men were injured in conflicts relating to land disputes, extortion and property grabbing.

Murdered 142 and 57 raped in October, 2002

According to the mediawatch report of Democracywatch a total number of 142 people were murdered in the last month, of which 35 were women, 25 were children and 85 were men. Around 30 children and 27 women were raped.

Of 20 dowry-related incidents, 15 were killed and 5 were injured. Some of the murdered housewives for dowry are Kulsum Mini(20) of Gazipur, Sayeda Khatun(15) of Kushtia, Mina Begum(30) of Narshingdi, Khaleda(19) of Rangpur. Pakhi Akhter(18) of Comilla, Selina of Bagerhat(18), Matia Begum(20) of Gaibandha, Sabirunnesa Chobi(23) of Jheneidha and Shanaj Begum(20) of Dhaka.

Democracywatch's report revealed that a number of 22 peoples suffered acid throwing in the last month. Of them 16 were women, 4 were  children and 9 men. Some of them were Ayesha Khatun of Khulna, Delowara(20) of Mymensingh, Bikash(26) of Dinajpur, an advocate of Dhaka, her 2 daughter and 1 associate, Baby Akhter(12) of Chittagong, school student of Narail, Shilipi and Jarina Begum(40) of Patuakhali.

Additionally, 31 people were abducted last month including women and children. Around 81 men were murdered and 1153 men were injured in conflicts relating land disputes, extortion and property grabbing.

Effective implementation of law

According to Democracywatch's report 7 were sentenced to death and 52 were imprisoned for various lengths of time in the last month.

Some of these major verdicts include the death sentence for 3 hoodlums in Trisha murder case in Gaibandha, imprisonment for 5 ruffians who led Shmi to commit suicide, life imprisonment to 4 people for acid throwing in Tangail, death sentence for a husband for murder of his wife in Sherpur, life imprisonment for a person for child killing in Jhalokathi and life imprisonment for a husband for killing his swife in Laxmipur.

Noe: The army has been deployed to take over the law and order situation for last 18 days. After their withdrawal the organization will make a report on their performance.

Violence recorded in the month of September 2002

A total of 33 incidents of acid throwing, 9 incidents of dowry 78 incidents of rape took place in September 2002 over the country.

On 33 incidents of acid throwing 24 women, 9 children and 8 men were injured and 2 women were killed.

In the case of dowry 7 women were injured and 2 were killed.
On 78 incidents of rape 2 children were killed including a children of 6 years.

During the period 507 different types of social violence occurred over the country. In these violence a total of 287 people were died including 61 women and 19 children and 1519 people were injured.

A total of 6 incidents of Journalist oppression took place in last month while 11 journalists were injured.

56 incidents of snatching recorded over the country in this one month.

Violence recorded in the month of August 2002

A total of 30 incidents of acid throwing, 15 incidents of dowry took place across the country while78 female violated during the last month.

Among the incidents of acid throwing, 18 women, 6 children and 11 men were injured.

A total of 8 women injured and seven were killed in the incidents of dowry.

Five women were killed after rape during the time including two-child girl, one in Bhola districts and a women were among the victims.

A total of 17 incidents of religious conflict took place during the last month

A total of 22 incidents of Journalist oppression took place in last month while 28 journalists were injured.

A total number of 13 incidents of torture and 5 incidents of extortion took place by police.

Major Findings:

On 202 political incidents in June 2002 a total of 34 people were dead where 621 were injured. Of these terrorist incidents inter and intra political clashes (133) are dominant.

During this one month clash between groups (339) occurred the most, which are non-political or social violence.

21 terrorist incidents by police were recorded over this period. This included 4 incidents of torture in safe custody and 11 occurrences by police. 2 women were raped by police.

On average 2 women died everyday in different incidents. 50 women were raped. 5 cases of violence against women are recorded each day on an average.

During the last month 107 cases of child molestation were exposed. 61 incidents of child raping happened and 3 children died in this incident.

307 different types of accident occurred over the last one month and in these incidents 367 people died. During this time 144 people suicide.

Major Findings:

On 128 political incidents in May 2002 a total of 21 people were dead where 686 were injured. Of these terrorist incidents inter and intra political clashes (96) are dominant.

During this one month clash between groups (255) occurred the most, which are non-political or social violence. On average 7 people were dead due to these reasons.

15 terrorist incidents by police were recorded over this period. This included 6 incidents of torture and death under safe custody and 7 occurrences by police. 2 women were raped by police and 1 died after rape.

On average 2 women died and 3 injured everyday in different incidents. 41 women were raped. At least 4 cases of violence against women are recorded each day on an average.

During the last month 72 cases of child molestation were exposed. 31 incidents of child raping happened and 6 children died in this incident. 

197 different types of accident occurred over the last one month and in these incidents 730 people died (In April 2002 the number was 214). In May only two launch accidents killed a massive 463 people (until recent reports). During this time 74 people suicide of which the number of female is nearly double (48) than that of male (26).
